Jogathon, Choice, etc.

Good afternoon LPE families! As we head full steam into October, I wanted to give you a few updates about some exciting upcoming events and reminders.  It has been a busy first few weeks of school as you can imagine but seeing your children here at school is the highlight of my day.  Thank you for sharing them with us! As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  Have a wonderful day everyone.  –MM

  1. Our annual JOGATHON is this Thursday 9/30!  This is always such a fun event and if you are new to LPE, believe me…your child will LOVE the Jogathon.  Please see my notes about this event below. Our school can’t thank you enough for supporting Loma Portal by helping your child collect donations! Please keep in mind that these donations help fund our STEAM, Music, and Library programs while also funding additional classroom/campus supplies and materials.  One of the things that make LPE so special is the various programs on our campus, such as Music and STEAM, that other schools aren’t able to offer.  These fun programs help us tap into more of our students’ interests and abilities making them well-rounded students who are ready to succeed in middle school and beyond!  Please keep those donations coming.  : )
    1. Jogathon Notes:
      1. During the Jogathon, each class will run/walk for about 30 minutes.  It will be a fun and exciting environment with plenty of great music, bubbles, and excitement!
      2. On Thursday, please have your child wear comfortable clothing and sneakers (a Jogathon tshirt will be provided).
      3. We will have water stations available but please have your child come to school with extra water on Thursday.
      4. Unfortunately, parents will not be able to come to campus to cheer our kids on this year due to COVID restrictions
      5. As students take part in the Jogathon, they will be split up by grade level and class as much as possible in order to limit the spread of germs
      6. While students are running/walking, they may take their mask off
  2. Our annual School Choice tours are coming up on October 4th, 11th, and 18th (9am, meet outside our Main Office)  These tours are open to all families who have children currently attending other SDUSD schools but would like to enroll here at Loma Portal in Fall 2022.  More info about our tours and our district’s Choice program can be found HERE. Please spread the word to your neighbors and friends!
  3. Recently, LPE had a student who tested positive for COVID.  NONE of our students have been considered a close contact so there are no necessary steps to take for any of our families.  Please just keep a close an eye on your children and let our Health Office know immediately if your child exhibits any symptoms (619-860-5600).  Please read our district’s “Non Close Contact” letter HERE .  Let me know if you have any questions about this.
  4. SSC and ELAC - we are still looking for a few parents who are willing to join our School Site Council (SSC) and/or our English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)!  Both of these are ways to involve our parents in school decision making and involve minimal meetings (4-5 times per year).  Please let me know if you are interested....the SSC and ELAC are great ways to get involved!
Friday Absences - Our attendance team and I have been noticing a concerning trend to start the year. We have been tracking attendance data regularly and have noticed that close to 10% of our total student enrollment has been absent each of the first FOUR Fridays of the school year. Of course, please keep your child at home if they are sick, but regular school attendance is critical to your child's academic, social, and emotional growth.  Good attendance is even more important now with schools being closed during the pandemic.  Please make sure your child attends school every day when they are healthy.
