Checking In...
Good morning Loma Portal families! I just wanted to check in with you and to give you some updated information. I know we are in a confusing time and there is quite a bit of information going around to go along with daily Online Learning and the stressors in your own lives. I would like to quickly commend you all for your diligence, positivity, and grace in creating learning environments for your children. Our staff and I appreciate all that our staff and families have done and are doing during Online Learning. This is not an easy task but I have been so thrilled to hear stories about parents, students, and staff going above and beyond to make this work. The creativity and “can do” attitude I have seen these past few weeks is just breathtaking at times. Makes me so proud to be a part of LPE! And honestly, I know there are times of struggle. There are times of frustration. There are times when we sometimes think things are just not working. I am right there with you. But it is at those times when we all have to just take a breath, go for a quick walk, watch some reality TV, or do whatever it is that you need to do in order to take a brain break. This goes for our students too (minus the reality TV please). We will get through this! Please…use me as a resource. Email me. Check in with teachers during Office Hours. Ask questions. Praise your children (often) for their perseverance. And please take care of yourselves. We are not in an ideal situation and I know we are all looking forward to “normal.” I am hoping that day will come soon….but for now, let’s work together to keep our students happy and learning. Please email me if you have any questions or if I can support you in ANY way. Have a wonderful week everyone! --MM
1. SDUSD Phase 1 Clarification: Last week, we were all notified about our district’s decision to begin Phase 1 of school reopening (Appointment Based Learning opportunities). On Friday 10/2, you were all sent a letter from all of the Point Loma Cluster Principals (HERE) providing a general outline for what Phase 1 is and how we would be moving forward with that plan. I wanted to make sure you understood more specifically how Phase 1 would proceed. First and foremost, Phase 1 will affect a very small percentage of our students. Less than 10% of our student enrollment is eligible for this service. Phase 1 is meant to provide some additional support to a very small number of students based on their level of need. Online Learning remains SDUSD’s #1 option and teachers’ online schedules will remain mostly unchanged. Our school is currently in the process of determining staffing and we will begin reaching out to certain families next week with more specifics. Again, only a small number of students will be eligible for appointment based services. Appointments could be brief (~30 minutes) and will begin at some point in mid to late October. Also, if your child is eligible and our school reaches out to you, you have every right to opt out of this service if you do not feel comfortable sending your child to school. I am hoping more students will be able to get back on campus in the near future. Click on our SGT/SSC presentation HERE for more information.
2. School Site Council (SSC) and School Governance Team (SGT): Our first meeting was held yesterday and agendas, minutes, and meeting dates are posted on our SSC/SGT website HERE.
3. Our next Principal’s Coffee meeting is this Friday 10/9 at 9am (email Principal Morici if you need the link). I will be recording the meeting so if you cannot attend, I will be sending the presentation and video out to all parents. Topics will include Phase 1 of Reopening and, if time permits, our school’s Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA).
